The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is celebrating the Lunar New Year at Atlanta Symphony Hall on Saturday, January 29, 2027. It's a program that pairs Chinese and Korean folk songs to mark the year of the fire goat, and it's built around the debuts of two rising stars: violinist Timothy Chooi and Metropolitan Opera baritone Joo Won Kang.
The evening is led by guest conductor Junping Qian. The program opens with Huanzhi Li's Spring Festival Overture and Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon, arranged by Y. Suzuki. From there, it takes a turn toward the operatic with Largo al factotum della cittΓ from Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, followed by Dong-Soo Shin's San-ah (Mountain). The night also features a brand-new work by Atlanta composer Alice Hong, and the Butterfly Lovers violin concerto by Z. He and Chen. It closes with Y. Bao's Happy Sunrise.
Under Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann, the multi-GRAMMY-winning ASO is framing the concert as a look at a 3,500-year tradition. The pairing of Chinese and Korean folk songs brings together two distinct musical heritages on one stage, and the new piece by Alice Hong adds a local voice to the mix. With Chooi and Kang both making their debuts here, the program leans heavily on the soloists as much as the orchestra.
