Jazz guitarist John Scofield revisits his fusion-groove tunes from his Blue Matter, Uberjam and AGoGo bands with Oteil Burbridge, Larry Goldings and Adam Deitch.
John Scofield brings his Electrospective show to City Winery on Sunday, October 25, with two sets that afternoon and evening. It's a look back at the fusion-groove side of his career, and he's not doing it alone. He's playing guitar with Oteil Burbridge on bass, Larry Goldings on keyboards, and Adam Deitch on drums.
Scofield has been playing for 54 years and has three Grammys to his name, and for a good chunk of that time he's detoured from straight-ahead jazz to mix in funk. Electrospective pulls from that particular stretch. The set draws on tunes from his Blue Matter, Uberjam, and AGoGo bands, and he's adding new material into the mix. It's the upbeat, groove-heavy side of his work, which puts it in a different place than the low-key traditional style of his latest release with Dave Holland.
The band he's put together for this is a seasoned one. Adam Deitch comes from Lettuce, Larry Goldings has played with Scary Goldings and James Taylor, and Oteil Burbridge is a name you've likely run across from Dead & Company, Tedeschi Trucks, and the Allman Brothers. Between them, they've got plenty of ground covered.
