Public showcase of original works by emerging choreographers who completed the ten-week EMERGING choreography course.
Emerging: A Course in Creativity has its public showcase at the Emory Performing Arts Studio on Sunday, October 18, with the Black Warrior Dance taking center stage. It's the final stop of a ten-week choreography course, and the whole point of the program is to get these pieces in front of an audience.
If you're not familiar with how it works, Emerging started as a platform for new choreographers and has since grown into an intensive ten-week course. The goal is to give artists the tools, guidance, and creative space to develop their own voices. Over the course of the program, participants work through choreography, production, creative direction, and collaboration, and they spend a good chunk of their time figuring out how to take an artistic vision from a concept on paper to a finished piece on stage. This showcase is the culmination of all that workβthe moment the studio doors open and the work goes public.
Because it's a showcase of a course, you're seeing original work from artists who've spent the last couple of months refining it. The Black Warrior Dance is the main feature of the evening, and it's the result of that ten-week process. It's a good chance to see new choreography coming out of the city, especially if you're interested in the process behind the performance.
