The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra presents cellist Sterling Elliott for a program of Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Hindemith and more, as part of the Delta Classical Series 3.
Sterling Elliott joins the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Atlanta Symphony Hall on Thursday, February 4, and again on Saturday, February 6, both at 8 PM. The cellist is the guest for the evening, and the program is built around Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, which is the main feature of the night. The ASO describes Elliott as a "stellar young cellist," and he'll be taking the lead on that one.
The concert opens with Debussy's Nuages and Fêtes from Nocturnes, two atmospheric pieces that set a pretty mood before the Tchaikovsky takes over. From there, the program shifts into two early American works: a raucous, wine-induced Bacchanale by Griffes and the mysterious The Unanswered Question by Ives. It's a bit of a jump from the French impressionism of the opener, and it puts two very different American voices side by side.
Closing the night is Hindemith's Mathis der Maler, a work that draws on medieval chant and brings the full force of the orchestra to bear. It depicts Biblical scenes that range from angelic exaltation to demonic grotesquerie, so it's a big, dramatic finish that uses the whole ensemble. The whole evening is part of the orchestra's Delta Classical Series 3, with conductor Eric Jacobsen leading the ASO.
