Jazz duo Dana and Alden McWayne play The EARL with opening act Alex Amen.
Dana and Alden bring their latest record, Papa's Boat, to The EARL on Monday, November 2, with Alex Amen opening. Dana and Alden are brothers from Eugene, Oregon, who play as a jazz duo: Dana on saxophone and Alden on drums. They blend instrumental jazz with indie pop and rock, and Papa's Boat is the latest chapter in that mix.
The album takes its name from a photograph of a trip to Asia taken by their maternal grandfather, whom they called Papa. They credit him with their wanderlust, and that's the thread that runs through the record. It's rooted in jazz, but it pulls in indie, pop, rap, and bossa nova, and features collaborations with Mei Semones, Melanie Charles, and Brazilian songwriter Marcos Valle. They recorded it in London in March 2025 with Malcolm Catto. The duo's label, Concord, released Speedo in 2024, which raised their profile before this one.
Opening the night is Alex Amen, a 26-year-old Texas artist and songwriter. He moved to California at 18 to study filmmaking, joined the Dittman Family Commune, and formed the band American Slang in 2017. From there, he spent three years in relative isolation on a Puget Sound island, where he focused on mycology, mountaineering, poetry, and wooden boat building. He returned to music and self-produced his first EP, The Zorthian Tapes, in 2023.
