Concert by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann, pairing Brahms' Third Symphony with excerpts from three Wagner operas.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is pairing Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner at Symphony Hall on Thursday, October 8 and Saturday, October 10, both at 8 PM. Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann is leading the ASO through a program that frames the two 19th-century composers as rivals: Brahms' Romani-flavored, carefully crafted writing set against Wagner's freewheeling passion and Teutonic bombast.
Brahms takes center stage with Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90, a work the ASO describes as having explosive energy. It's the next installment of 'Brahms Revealed,' a series the orchestra has been working through. Around it, the program pulls excerpts from three Wagner operas: the Prelude to Act I of Lohengrin, the Prelude and 'Liebestod' from Tristan und Isolde, and the Overture to Rienzi. The 'Liebestod' is the ecstatic finale of Tristan, and hearing it alongside the Third Symphony lets you hear the two styles side by side in one sitting.

The ASO is one of the city's cultural anchors, known for its live performances, its choruses, and a long list of GRAMMY Award-winning recordings. These two concerts are part of the Delta Classical Series 2 subscription, so if you've been following the season, this is one of the bigger dates on the calendar. Tickets run from $42 to $147, and both the Thursday and Saturday shows start at 8 PM at Symphony Hall, 1280 Peachtree Street NE.
