Classic country concert by Benjamin Tod and his Lost Dog Street Band, with support from Conrad Moore, at the Variety Playhouse.
Benjamin Tod & Lost Dog Street Band play Variety Playhouse on Thursday, October 22, with Conrad Moore opening. It's a classic country night, and Tod has been on a run lately.
Earlier this year he put out Vengeance and Grace, a double album that does two things at once: one disc is new songs played with a full band, and the second is those same songs performed solo. That was followed by County is Dead, a digital-only collection of a dozen country and western standards by Jimmie Rogers, George Jones, and Billy Joe Shaver, and even Bob Dylan and The Byrds. Between the two, he's put out a fair amount of new material in a short window.
Tod describes himself as a classic country lover, and the set should reflect that. Reviewer Hal Horowitz says he has plenty of material for a few hours of honky-tonking classic country the way it used to sound. With the full band behind him, the sound leans toward that traditional country and western style, and with Conrad Moore opening, the whole night stays in that territory.
