The Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta marks the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death with the Spring Sonata and a thrilling transcription of the 5th Symphony for piano, four hands, performed by Julie & David Coucheron.
Julie & David Coucheron perform at Emerson Concert Hall on Friday, January 15, in a program that pairs the Spring Sonata with a transcription of Beethoven's 5th Symphony for piano, four hands. The two pianists share the keyboard to bring the symphony down to a single instrument, a version that keeps the original's energy but changes the scale entirely.
The concert opens a year of tributes by the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta to Ludwig van Beethoven, marking the 200th anniversary of the composer's death on March 26, 1827. It's the Society's most ambitious project to date: a season-long celebration that runs through the year. As part of that, the Vega Quartet—the Society's quartet-in-residence—will perform Beethoven's complete cycle of 16 string quartets across six concerts.

The Society is currently in its 34th season, led by artistic director William Ransom. Since it started 34 years ago, it's kept up a mix of professional performance and community work, most notably through its Music for Healing initiative, which brings live music to health care centers around Atlanta. The Coucheron performance is one of the first stops in this year's Beethoven focus, with the Spring Sonata and the 5th Symphony transcription setting the tone for what follows. The concert takes place at the Emerson Concert Hall, part of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts in Atlanta.
