Concert by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kristiina Poska, featuring George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' and 'Catfish Row', plus Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4. Part of the Delta Classical Series and an UpTempo Teen Night.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra brings America @ 250: Rhapsody in Blue to Atlanta Symphony Hall on Thursday, October 22, at 8 PM. It's part of the orchestra's Delta Classical Series, and it's also an UpTempo Teen Night, which means middle and high school students get an interactive session led by music professionals before the full performance starts.
The first half centers on George Gershwin. You'll hear Rhapsody in Blue and Catfish Row, a suite from Porgy and Bess, which has been called "the great American opera" since 1935. Both have worked their way through American culture over the decades, appearing in the hands of artists as different as Maya Angelou, Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, and Sublime. Neither sits squarely in jazz or classical, and they both capture the spirit of New York City as toe-tapping fun.
The second half shifts to Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4, nicknamed The Inextinguishable. It's an indomitable piece of music that stands on its own, and it shares the stage with two debuts: Estonian conductor Kristiina Poska and jazz pianist Sullivan Fortner, both making their first appearance with the ASO.
