The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra honours Coretta Scott King on the centenary of her birth with works by Bernstein, Florence Price, and William Grant Still, alongside new commissions and 'Loud' by Jimmy López.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is paying tribute to Coretta Scott King at Atlanta Symphony Hall on Thursday, April 29, and Saturday, May 1, 2027. Both performances start at 8 PM. It's a local tribute for a global figure: Coretta Scott King was one of Atlanta's own and a lifelong leader in human rights, and 2027 marks the centenary of her birth.
The program pairs new commissions with established names. Two new works were written specifically for this occasion, one by composer Carlos Simon and another by Jasmine Barnes. They sit alongside Loud by Jimmy López, which chronicles the struggle for human rights among members of the LGBTQ community. The rest of the evening draws from Bernstein, Florence Price, and William Grant Still.
On the podium is conductor Kedrick Armstrong, making his ASO debut, with soprano Flora Hawk joining him on stage. The combination of new pieces and older records means the night moves between music written for this specific tribute and works that have already found their place in the repertoire.
