If you're looking for a way to kick off the holiday season without leaving the city, the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta is turning into a winter wonderland. WinterTide runs from November 13 through January 3, and the best part is that it's included with general admission, so there's no extra ticket on top of what you'd already pay to get in. The whole thing is built for families, and it's easy to fold into a day out with kids.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Atlanta and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

The centerpiece is a new 40-foot LED tree in the atrium, which gets lit every morning at 10 a.m. while cheerful elves welcome everyone through the doors. From there, the celebration spreads across the building with festive food and drinks, holiday music, special animal presentations, and Santa's North Pole Village. The village is all new this year, packed with playful activities, giant games, sweet treats, and a few exclusive holiday gifts you can't find elsewhere, including a gingerbread whale shark plush. Santa stops by on select days for photos, and when he's not around, Domino the whale shark mascot takes over greeting duties.
Of course, the real draw is Scuba Claus, who dives among the whale sharks and manta rays in Ocean Voyager, one of the largest marine habitats in the world. The Home Depot helped build it, and the numbers are worth knowing: more than 6.3 million gallons of water, a 100-foot underwater tunnel, and viewing windows that add up to 4,574 square feet, with the largest one standing 23 feet tall by 61 feet wide. The habitat stays around 20 to 30 feet deep at a steady 76 degrees, and it's home to whale sharks, manta rays, and thousands of other fish. For a more personal morning, Wake Up with Santa offers a light breakfast with a view into the largest exhibit from 8 to 11 a.m. on December 5, 13, and 20, where you can meet Santa and snap a photo. Daily holiday presentations with bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions round out the animal side of things.
If you're going on a weekend, there's a live music lineup on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the Atlanta Boy Choir, Alma Mexicana, the Harptones, the Atlanta Women's Choir, local musician Carey Durham, the Georgia State School of Music, and the a cappella group Tinseltones all taking turns. The Atlanta Boy Choir is a Grammy Award-winning youth arts institution that's been shaping boys into artists and leaders since 1946. And if you'd rather skip the kids altogether, WinterTide After Hours is an adults-only evening with themed cocktails, mocktails, performances, and winter decor, running on November 20 and December 18 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
A few practical notes before you go. The aquarium is open 365 days a year, with daily entry ending an hour and a half before closing; current hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is limited and cashless, so booking a prepaid space online ahead of time is smart, with overflow available at the World of Coca-Cola and nearby public lots. Reservations for the dolphin and sea lion presentations can only be made on the day of your visit and spots go quickly, so plan to be in line 15 to 30 minutes before showtime. Strollers are allowed but need to be under 29 inches wide and 52 inches long, and stroller wagons, jogging strollers, and ride-on vehicles aren't permitted unless there's a medical or sensory need. With all that, it's a solid, stress-free way to get some holiday spirit in early.
