If you have not been to Six by Nico, the premise is simple enough to explain: it is a six-course tasting menu built around a theme, and that theme changes every six weeks. The Aberdeen site sits at 367 Union Street, and the whole thing is led by chef Nico Simeone. The idea is that you book a table without knowing the menu in advance, and the experience resets regularly enough that you can go back and find something completely different next time.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Aberdeen and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

At the moment, the theme is American Murder Mystery, which runs from 5 October to 15 November. It is framed as a story set in the small town of Hollow Creek, where a murder shook the community thirty years ago. The plot follows Maggie Sawyer, who returns to town to escape her problems in New York, only to die by night; the case is titled The Last Night of Maggie Sawyer and is set on 30 October 1996. The courses lean into that American feel: fried chicken and waffles with a buckwheat waffle and smoked bacon caramel, an ox cheek croquette with pumpkin velouté, a Cuban sandwich with chorizo and smoked ham hough, a New England clam chowder with roasted ling and crab bisque, a chicken and wild mushroom casserole, and a maple apple cobbler with oat and rye whiskey ice cream. There are vegetarian alternatives for each course, and you can add on snacks like loaded tater tots, burnt end hash browns or sourdough with Old Bay butter.
The price for the American Murder Mystery menu is £49 a head, with a wine pairing at £35 and a cocktail pairing at £40. It is worth knowing that the first ten tables at each restaurant were £59 a person, with the organiser eating for free, so the standard rate is the one to budget for.
If you miss this window, the next theme is A Christmas Carol, which runs from 16 November to 3 January. That one is built around Charles Dickens' novel and Scrooge's journey through Christmas past, present and future, described as a feast for Tiny Tim. The menu follows the ghosts: a Lincolnshire poacher gougère for the bells, a King Edward roast potato with ham hough for the ghost of Christmas past, a chicken liver parfait for the ghost of Christmas present, roasted ling for the ghost of Christmas yet to come, a chicken, duck and turkey ballotine for the Cratchits' feast, and a chocolate orange mousseline to finish. That menu is £55 a head, with the same pairing prices.
Opening hours are worth checking before you turn up: the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, open 17:00 to 23:00 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 12:00 to 23:00 from Friday to Sunday. Bookings are handled online, and if you have a voucher, you can check its balance at gifts.sixbynico.co.uk/balance. The reviews are consistently strong, with diners praising the food, the service and the atmosphere, and a few noting that you really do not need to know the menu before you book.
