Fish Shop is on Netherley Place in Ballater, which is in Aberdeenshire rather than the city of Aberdeen, so it's worth planning the trip out into the Cairngorms. It's a relaxed space with around 40 covers, and the first thing you notice is the ceiling: a floating shoal of 133 basket-weave fish, handmade by local basketmaker Helen Jackson from willow she grew in nearby Banchory. The tables are made from recycled plastic yoghurt pots, and the group table is a salvaged fishing boat from the Ardnamurchan peninsula. The walls hold portraits and photographs of Scotland's fishing history, including commissioned portraits of well-known faces from the Aberdeenshire fishing community by artist Gideon Summerfield. The restaurant is the sister property of The Fife Arms hotel in Ballater.

The menu changes every day depending on the catch and the season, so the dishes you get will depend on the boats that week. On the October à la carte, the Cape Wrath oysters come natural with mignonette and lemon, dressed with elderflower and apple vinegar, or as Champagne tempura with mayonnaise, all at £4.50 each. The Macduff crab crumpet (£4.00) is a snack that has stayed on the menu, and so has the Macduff lobster tagliarini with chilli, garlic and chervil (£27.50). Critics Grace Dent and Giles Coren have both praised these two dishes. For mains, the October options included roast Shetland halibut with white bean purée and mushrooms (£42.50), roasted hake loin with muscade pumpkin, miso and cavolo nero (£32.00), and Invercauld Estate venison (£36.00). Sides are £5.50 each, including seaweed buttered potatoes and chips with mayonnaise. Set lunch is £21.50 for two courses or £26.00 for three, and the October sample included crumbed market fish with tartar sauce and a Victoria plum and almond tart. The chef's menu, designed to be shared by the table, was £70 per person in October.
The restaurant is open for lunch from Thursday to Sunday, from 12:00 to 14:15, and for dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, from 17:30 until late, during the winter schedule that runs through December. It is closed from 18 to 22 November 2026. Booking 24 hours ahead is recommended. A no-show or late cancellation is charged £25 per person to the card. For parties of more than six, or for the Boat Table which seats up to 12, you need to call 01339 720250 or email events@fishshopballater.co.uk. There is a children's menu with dishes such as omelette and chips (£8.50) and flat fish goujons with chips and peas (£11.50). The fishmonger sells fish from the same boats for collection between 10:00 and 14:00, Thursday to Saturday, and it also sells seaweeds, preserved seafood and Blackthorn Seasalt. It delivers to Braemar on Saturdays.
The restaurant buys shellfish from Cape Wrath, Macduff and other small fishing villages, plus line-caught fish from the South Coast. Bycatch from its selected boats is used to cut down on waste, and all meat is free-range and locally sourced. The drinks list includes biodynamic and low carbon wines, along with spirits and beers from Scottish micro-breweries and distilleries. Smoking uses zero-emission charcoal. A discretionary £1 donation to the Ocean Recovery Project is added to the bill. Fish Shop kept its Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide for a second year in 2026.
